Freight and Shipping

Freight and shipping have become vital to how the world lives and operates. Freight refers to goods and products that are transported from one location to another for use. Shipping is the process in which the goods and products are transported. There are numerous types of freight from industrial types of freight like automobiles, oil and other raw materials to food and produce like fruits, vegetables, and salt. There are also various ways freight can be shipped. The most basic way to break down the types of shipping is by land transport, air transport and sea transport. Land shipping typically means by truck or train, air shipping means by plane and shipping by sea means by cargo ship.

If we weren’t able to transport freight from place to place, we would only be able to utilize the resources that are available in close proximity, which would severely limit how people live. Because we’re able to transport freight economies have grown and people are able to live in more remote locations, and the world’s resources have become available to just about each and every country.

Automobiles are one of the most well-known types of what is known as freight. Because they can be transported, people are able to choose from a variety of cars from all over the world. In America, we have the choice of American-made, Japanese, German, British and other types of cars and trucks from other countries. And each country that exports its automobiles is able to profit from sales and expand its economy.

This idea also applies to all other types of freight. There are products imported from other countries that are used in construction, that are used to feed people and that are necessary to keep living the lifestyles to which we have become accustomed to. For example, the U.S. is one of the largest exporters of grains, which are a key ingredient in making breads, cereals, and even liquors. If this grain wasn’t able to be transported as freight, several countries including the U.S. would be aversely affected. Some countries would even go without food and others would lose important economic income.

Automobiles and grains are just two examples of freight and how important it is to be able to transport freight from one place to another, but how freight products are transported is just as important.

Shipping by land could mean shipping by truck or by freight train. Trucking is the most common form of shipping because even after freight has been shipped by air or sea, trucking is usually needed to get the products to an exact location. In 2002, it was reported that trucking brought more value in the U.S. in terms of transportation mode than any other form of shipping.

Freight train is another way to transport goods by land. Depending on the size of the freight and the distance the freight has to travel, sometimes rail is more economical. The greater the distance the freight has to travel the more economical using a freight train becomes. However, even if the freight travels by train, many times it will still utilize another form of transportation such as trucking or cargo ship to get the goods being carried to their final destination.

Freight can also be transported by air. There are some airlines that are dedicated solely to shipping freight. And some airplanes such as the 747 were designed to be able to be built into passenger or freight planes easily. Air travel becomes necessary when freight is needed to arrive quickly. When goods are shipped by sea, this takes much longer than by air. Even so, shipping by sea is definitely useful and used often. There are cargo ships that carry containers, which are sealed to protect the goods being carried. The bulk of international trade is typically handled by cargo ships each year. And there are also tankers, which are most commonly known for transporting oil.
